Facetime for iPad

by on Jul.22, 2010, under iPad Rumors

Have you had some Facetime? It’s pretty impressive. I’ve held off on getting my iPhone 4 to see how this whole “death grip” thing pans out, but that hasn’t stopped me from appropriating my friend’s iPhone 4′s and making video calls.

Well, BGR is reporting that Facetime will be making its way onto iPads and iPod Touchs very soon along with this photo that is supposedly from an iPod Touch.

iPad 2 will come in all sizes

by on Jul.21, 2010, under iPad Rumors

new ipad sizes

The latest rumor is that the next generation of iPads will come in two additional sizes; a 5.6 inch and 7 inch model with OLED screens. Something tells me that this rumor is completely unfounded, but I’ll let you be the judge.

MobileMe Comes to the iPad

by on Jul.20, 2010, under iPad Apps

mobileme logo
The MobileMe app had an update recently and is now iPad compatible. So those of you that are MobileMe subscribers will now have a full app to use on your iPads.

What’s New In Version 1.2
- Designed for both iPhone and iPad
- Multitasking support for iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS (iOS 4 required).
- Quickly switch to another app and back to iDisk
- Play audio from your iDisk while using another app
- When app is opened, the last file or directory viewed is displayed
- Option to open iDisk documents in compatible apps such as iBooks
- When sharing a file, an email can be sent from any configured email account
- The URL for a shared file can be copied and pasted
- Various stability improvements

One feature in particular stands out and that is the ability to play audio from iDisk while using another app. While this is not the cloud solution I’ve been waiting for Apple to launch it is at least heading in the right direction. The ultimate goal would be to store your music, movies, documents etc. in the cloud vs. needing to buy 64GB (or bigger) device to hold it all.

There is however one major flaw here. While iDisk will play your music, it will only play it one track at a time! So you can’t select a playlist and sit back and listen while using other apps like you can with the iPod app. After each song you will need to go select the next song. Without the ability to play an album or playlist this is a pointless feature. Back to the drawing board Apple!

iPad surpasses the Android in traffic

by on Jul.19, 2010, under iPad News

mobile traffic graph

Despite the fact it’s only been on the market for three months, Apple’s iPad now represents 17 out of 1000 of all Web browser traffic tracked by Net Applications. As of June the iPad’s traffic exceeds Android traffic, which represented 14 out of 1000 for all Web browsing traffic.

Impressive numbers.

Will.i.am recovers his stolen iPad

by on Jul.18, 2010, under iPad News

Don’t you hate it when someone breaks into your Bentley and steals $10,000 worth of your stuff including your precious iPad. Me too.

Well that’s exactly what happened to Will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas when his Bentley was parked in the Hollywood Hills. But the story doesn’t end there. Will.i.am used the Find My iPad feature that comes with MobileMe to track down the location of his iPad and then passed that information along to the police leading to the return of his belongings.

Pretty cool.

The New Amazon Kindle

by on Jul.16, 2010, under iPad News

Wayne Campbell: And you know what the worst part is? I NEVER LEARNED TO READ.
Cassandra: Is that true?
Wayne Campbell: Yes. Everything except the reading part.                                                                                    - Wayne’s World

I don’t ever remember seeing TV commercials for the Kindle before the iPad came out. Do you?

Well, Amazon is wisely stepping up their game both with more aggressive marketing and with updated models.

The base model is only $189 and the Kindle DX has also had a reboot and a much needed lower price of $379. Both include free 3G,  the ability to post to Twitter and Facebook, a week of battery life and fast ebook downloads. Oh and one more crucial feature; you can actually read the screen outdoors in the sunlight. Pretty important feature in an eReader.

It’s hard to quantify exactly how much the iPad has . . . continue reading

Putting your iPad to work for you

by on Jul.15, 2010, under iPad News

The gang over at TiPB is running a contest and they want to know how you use the iPad for your job. This is a great little contest to enter, but it’s also fun to head over to their forums and read through some of the entries. Check it out!

From their site:

“We want some real life stories, some real world experience. We want to know what it’s like to use the iPhone in your line of work (and yes, being a student or caregiver or stay-at-home parent or even… politician, counts as work!)

1. Tell us what your job is.
2. Give us a paragraph or two describing how you use your iPad during your workday. Tell us the *story*.
3. Share any tips or tricks you might have come across. What about the iPad makes your job easier?
4. List the top 5, must have apps you use to get that job done.

And… That’s it!

We’ll be picking one reply every week or two and including it in a post right on the front page of TiPb.com. If/when your post gets picked, not only do you get your name (or username) up in lights, you get a sweet $20 iTunes gift certificate for your trouble! And yes, we will prioritize based on how awesome, how funny, how tragic, how well written, how inspiring, how disappointing, — generally how memorable your entry is. So bring it!”

Keep your iPad cool this summer

by on Jul.14, 2010, under iPad News

This post comes to you from a place I would typically refer to as “sunny California” in the middle of July, but sadly our June Gloom has overstayed its welcome this year and we’ve barely seen the sun this summer. But just in case you are actually enjoying some beach/pool weather where ever you are at I thought we take a minute and discuss the possibility of your iPad overheating.

ipad overheat warning

It seems there have been scattered reports of iPads overheating in the heat or prolonged direct sunlight. What’s not clear is whether or not this is an issue with all iPad’s or just some.

A visit to the Apple forums turns up a discussion titled iPad Overheating! or a search online will turn up some examples like this one of a pastor who was conducting a wedding using his iPad only to have it overheat mid-service.

Apple offers tips to avoid overheating on a support page. In addition to avoiding ”direct sunlight for extended amounts of time,” Apple suggests avoiding “certain features in hot conditions or direct sunlight for long periods of time, such as GPS tracking in a car on a sunny day or listening to music while in direct sunlight.”

So keep your iPad cool this summer and make sure it wears plenty of sunscreen.*

*Editor’s Note: We are employing the use of sarcasm. DO NOT slather your device in sunscreen.

Is this the iPad Shuffle?

by on Jul.13, 2010, under iPad Rumors

ipad shuffleIt doesn’t seem very likely to me, but this image of a 1.2 inch square touchscreen device has people guessing this will be the new Shuffle. It has me guessing how in the world, someone would manipulate a touchscreen so small! If Apple did add a touchscreen to the Shuffle it would be quite a change since up until now the Shuffle was the only Apple device without a screen at all. Read the full story at  iPodNN
