iPad 2 is here!

by on Mar.02, 2011, under iPad News, iPad Unboxed

Just as predicted Apple debuts the new iPad 2 in March. However, not all the predictions about features came true.

ipad 2 with smart coverSo what is new?

- iPad 2 is 33% thinner and 15% lighter

- Dual core A5 chip

- Improved graphics

- Front and back cameras for Facetime and Photobooth

- Apple Smart Cover

- Option of the color white

- Usage of either the AT&T or Verizon network

- Plug and play with TV’s and Projectors

That’s a lot of new features! So what’s missing? Well in the months of speculation leading up to the announcement today there was talk of an SD card slot, multiple screen size options, retina display and a USB port. But I’m not surprised to see these features missing. It’s possible they will show up in future versions, but I think by now we all know that Apple doesn’t add features just for features sake.

What do you think? If you have a first generation iPad is this is enough to make you upgrade? For those of you who have waited, are you ready to buy?

Renting movies on your iPad vs. other renting options

Statler: I like the movie fine so far.

Waldorf: It hasn’t started yet.

Statler: That’s what I like about it. – The Muppet Show

renting movies on the iPad

Have you seen a Hollywood video store lately? Me neither. Blockbuster video stores are dwindling in number but barely hanging on thanks to the DVD delivery service they copied from Netflix. And have you been inside a Blockbuster video store lately? It feels like walking into a swap meet.

What about renting your movies from iTunes? . . .continue reading

iPhone 4 announced – What this means for iPad 2

by on Jun.08, 2010, under iPad Unboxed

iPad 2So yesterday’s announcement of the iPhone 4 was amazing. I think we learned a lot what is coming down the road for iPad 2.

I think an exciting thing will be the aluminosilicate glass – glass that’s 20 times stiffer and 30 times harder than plastic. It’s also finger print proof! No more smudges!

Another great feature is the retina display. I think that the display looks great, however, the retina technology is going to make this thing look like liquid. If you looked closely to the letters on this screen, you can almost make out the pixels in the letters. With retina display, each pixel is getting replaced by 4 smaller pixels that can even get higher resolution. Beautiful!

And one more thing we would like to see is the three-axis gyroscope. This will make movement with the iPad 2 in games amazing and accurate.

Read what Gizmodo has to say about iPhone 4 announcement for iPad 2.

How to save images on the iPad

by on May.19, 2010, under iPad Unboxed

A few days ago we covered how to take a screen shot on your iPad. But what if you just want to save a single image? Perhaps you want to save a photo someone has sent you from Mail, or maybe you want to save a friend’s Facebook profile picture to use as their Contact image.

save image on ipad

It’s very simple. Tap and hold the image and two options will appear:

Copy – will save it to the clipboard to be pasted elsewhere

Save Image – will save the image in your Photos

In Safari there are two additional options that will pop up: Open and Open in New Page

This will not work in every App on the iPad, mainly in Mail and Safari. So when tapping and holding the image does not produce the desired options then you can also take a screenshot and crop the photo later.

Typing on the iPad Touchscreen

by on May.18, 2010, under iPad Unboxed

“Press any key to continue. Where’s the any key?” – Homer Simpson

As I was in eager anticipation of receiving my iPad, my only concern prior to opening the box was, what would typing be like on it? Of course I had typed on an iPad in the Apple store and I was impressed with the touchscreen keyboard, but what I really wanted to know was what would extended typing be like? When I had long email communications to type out, documents to create on Pages, and blogs to post through WordPress then how happy would I be with my new iPad? Well, a week and a half of typing later and the verdict is in. Typing on the iPad is impressive and effective. . . . continue reading

Taking a screen shot on your iPad

by on May.17, 2010, under iPad News, iPad Unboxed

To take a screen shot on your iPad simply hold down the screen lock button on the top and the home buttons beneath the screen at the same time for a moment. When you release you will hear a sound like a camera snapping a picture and VOILA! Your picture will be waiting for you in your Photos.

This little tip can come in handy more often than you’d think. If you’ve ever wanted to capture an image from your iPad so you can save it, email it, upload it to Mobile Me, assign it to a contact, use it as a wallpaper, or edit it with PhotoGene. Or put it in your blog:

All your iPad charging questions answered

by on May.17, 2010, under iPad News, iPad Unboxed

If you’ve had any confusion over what devices will or won’t charge your iPad and what the best way to charge it is, welcome to the club. You’ve probably also noticed that the iPad takes quite awhile to fully recharge. Long battery life = long recharge time.

Charging tips direct from the Apple website:

“The fastest way to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter. When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge, but only when it’s in sleep mode. Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.”

Gizmodo took things one step further and actually ran tests to see just how long it took to charge the iPad through various methods. They timed the charge from 0% to 80% which they say is the baseline for a “quick charge” through; iPad’s standard 10W chargerGriffin’s PowerBlock iPad charger, the iPhone’s standard power adapter, and via a MacBook Pro’s USB port. Here are the results: (continue reading…)

Apple iPad Case Review

by on May.15, 2010, under iPad Accessories, iPad Unboxed

“Clothes make the man. Naked people have little or no influence on society.” –Mark Twain

I’ve been using the Apple iPad case ($39.99) for almost a week now and I’m ready to talk about it.

Short version: The case is highly functional, acceptable looking and priced right. I am happy enough with my purchase but will be on the look out for something better and I’m confident it won’t be too long before there is a much better option on the market.

Long version: . . . continue reading
