Safari on the iPad

by on May.07, 2010, under iPad Unboxed

“This morning I shot an elephant in my pajamas. How he got in my pajamas I’ll never know.” – Groucho Marx

Safari on the iPad is an absolute joy to use and the experience feels unique to the iPad, not just an enlarged iPhone experience like I had expected. For web junkies, this just might be the best web experience out there. Safari on the iPad is very close to Safari on a Mac, but revamped for a touchscreen operation system. So in a sense, Safari actually lives up to it’s name on the iPad. Unlike most mobile devices, like the iPhone, that give you . . . continue reading

The iPad is remarkably easy to use

by on May.06, 2010, under iPad Unboxed

“A child of five would understand this. Send someone to fetch a child of five.”- Groucho Marx

My first impression of the iPad 3G is how intuitive and easy to use the operating system really is. As soon as you pull it out of the box and sync it with your iTunes you simply began using it. There’s little to no learning curve. Now, it would be easy to say that I find the iPad so easy to use because I’ve been using an iPhone for years. True, but I found the iPhone easy to use right out of the box too. And everyone that I’ve begrudgingly handed my iPad over to in the past few days hasn’t . . .continue reading

3G woes

by on May.05, 2010, under iPad News, iPad Unboxed

Since the release of the 3G iPad there has been much talk of disappointment over the quality of video over 3G being much lower than over Wi-Fi. I’m not exactly sure what all the fuss is about. Did people really think that the iPad was so “magical and revolutionary” it could improve the beleaguered  AT&T 3G network? If anything, I expect the opposite. I fear the AT&T 3G network that the iPhone and iPad is imprisoned with, will worsen with the addition of hundreds of thousands of new 3G iPad users wanting to . . . continue reading

Sick in bed with the iPad

by on May.04, 2010, under iPad Unboxed

I didn’t plan for my first review of the iPad to come from the perspective of three days down with the flu but here it goes. While much more detailed and insightful reviews will come, let’s talk about how the iPad performs from the sick bed.

First of all, I think we can all agree that daytime TV sucks so once you’re caught up on the shows on your DVR there is nothing but soap operas and talk shows to distract you from the pain. This is where I would normally turn to my Macbook for entertainment, but this time I had the iPad. While it’s nearly impossible to get comfortable with a laptop you can curl right up with the iPad. A laptop is heavy, it gets hotter and hotter as you use it and with only a few hours of battery life it needs to stay plugged in. The iPad is light, cool and the battery lasts all day.

When I’m sick my bedside table is immediately covered in the contents of an entire small pharmacy so there’s no space leftover for a laptop, a book, a magazine, and the remote controls for the TV. There is space for the iPad. Yesterday, in between naps, my iPad replaced all of those. I read a chapter of Sense and Sensibility on the iBook app. I read an entire issue of National Geographic through the Zinio app. I watched a couple of episodes of season two of Party Down through the Netflix app. By the way if have not watched Party Down you are missing out! I played a bit of We Rule. I surfed the web and was able to keep up with the steady stream of work emails coming in. So far today I’ve watched an episode of Modern Family through the ABC player app and now I’m updating this blog through the WordPress app.

Of course no one ever wants to be sick, but if you are the iPad will be your best friend.

Apps! Apps! Apps!

by on May.02, 2010, under iPad Apps, iPad Unboxed

After spending 24 hours with the iPad here is a list of the free Apps I’m loving and I would recommend everyone download immediately!

ABC Player – kudos to ABC for this amazing app to view ABC shows

Netflix – a must for all Netflix subscribers for rearranging the queue and viewing Instant Watch movies

Wikipanion – a great app for accessing Wikipedia designed just for the iPad

EW Must List - a fluff app, but beautiful in its execution and lots of fun links

iBooks – a fantastic eReader

Soundhound – a surprising app that can replace the native iPod app and provide you access to your music library with more bells and whistles

Pandora - this app is designed to take full advantage of the iPad screen

AirVideo Free – view your videos that are currently on your computer on your iPad without using your precious memory

IMDB - although you can navigate to IMDB through Safari this app is designed for the iPad and it is really well done.

USA Today – a pretty good (and free) app to read USA Today

The Weather Channel – although I rarely check the weather since I live in San Diego and it’s always beautiful I absolutely love this app

We Rule - the only game I’ve played on the iPad. It’s free and mildly addicting
