Apple sues Samsung!
by J.J. on Apr.18, 2011, under iPad News
It looks like top dogs are fighting for dominance again.

The words “copyright” and “infringement” are being thrown around by Apple. They claim that the Samsung Galaxy and the Galaxy tab are the spitting image of the iPhone and the iPad. Specifically, the lawsuit says, ”Rather than innovate and develop its own technology and a unique Samsung style for its smart phone products and computer tablets, Samsung chose to copy Apple’s technology, user interface and innovative style in these infringing products.”
Now I have on several occasions mistaken a Samsung Galaxy for an iPhone but does that justify a lawsuit. We’ll have to wait and see.
Ironically, these two companies are not just competitors they also have a business relationship. You see, Apple uses Samsung parts in their devices. Awkward!

Two Million iPads Sold
by J.J. on Jun.01, 2010, under iPad News
“I don’t know how to put this but, I’m kind of a big deal” -Anchorman

Over the weekend Apple announced they had sold over 2 million iPads in under 60 days. Impressive. Especially when you consider that up until a few days ago the iPad was only available in the US and has now been available in 9 more countries for only four days. As momentum continues to build and the iPad continues to be available in more countries it will be exciting to watch those numbers climb.
“Customers around the world are experiencing the magic of iPad, and seem to be loving it as much as we do,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “We appreciate their patience, and are working hard to build enough iPads for everyone.”
To put this in perspective, it took over two years for Apple to sell its first two million iPods, and the original iPhone took four months to reach the two million milestone. Today these two devices dominated their categories.
Hulu says HTML5 isn’t good enough . . . yet
by J.J. on May.15, 2010, under iPad News
Hulu made some exciting announcements today about some new enhancements to their site. They also made some pretty clear statements about the future of HTML5 and Hulu.
“We continue to monitor developments on HTML5, but as of now it doesn’t yet meet all of our customers’ needs. Our player doesn’t just simply stream video, it must also secure the content, handle reporting for our advertisers, render the video using a high performance codec to ensure premium visual quality, communicate back with the server to determine how long to buffer and what bitrate to stream, and dozens of other things that aren’t necessarily visible to the end user. Not all video sites have these needs, but for our business these are all important and often contractual requirements.”
Hulu is quite clear that they know that HTML5 might have all of these capabilities in the future, just not right now. So for the foreseeable future it looks like Hulu will be sticking with Flash and will not be making an appearance on the iPad’s and iPhones.
There’s just one thing that I don’t understand. CBS is now streaming videos on HTML5 and their content is secure. I would imagine that CBS has the same needs for security, quality and advertising as Hulu. So how can HTML5 be good enough for CBS but not for Hulu? Interesting. Now, Hulu does not come right out and say that they aren’t working on an iPad/iPhone friendly option, they are simply sharing their stance on HTML5. There are other options. Netflix and ABC opted to create App’s for the iPad over converting their videos to HTML5. So, perhaps Hulu is looking at creating an App and is not ready to make an announcement yet. We shall see. But for Hulu to blame the available technology when CBS, ABC and Netflix are making it happen is ridiculous.
Could Mobile Me be free soon?
by J.J. on May.13, 2010, under iPad News, iPad Rumors
Mobile Me is Apple’s cloud computing service that includes email address (@me.com), 20GB of online storage, syncing of email, contacts, calendars, photos, notes, and bookmarks and Find My iPad/iPhone. The service comes with the pricetag of $99 a year for a single user, which is almost reasonable when you look at all the features, but overpriced when you realize that most of these features can be used for free through Google, Dropbox and the like. The service works well but could use a redesign, mainly iDisk.
I’ve been a subscriber of Mobile Me for about a year and half now and I subscribed because it’s a simple solution and I’m not a techie. After the first year I wasn’t going to renew, but then Apple add the Find my iPhone feature and I couldn’t find anything that would duplicate that so I stayed.
But according to MacDailyNews’ source Mobile Me will be free “sooner than later… depends on certain facilities going operational.”
Sounds good to me.

Is Verizon going to get the iPhone in 2010? (Updated)
by J.J. on May.10, 2010, under iPad News

Doesn’t look like it. The iPhone is in an AT&T prison and it looks like it won’t even be up for parole until early 2011.
When the iPhone was released in 2007 as an exclusive AT&T phone, millions (including me) made the jump to AT&T. We ended up with a great phone but a horrible network. While AT&T and Apple kept the details of their agreements quiet the initial rumors were that it was a two year exclusive agreement. So iPhone users saw a light at the end of the tunnel, and that someday they could take their iPhones to Verizon. And yet here it is, mid 2010, and there is still no Verizon iPhone. And it looks like we have, in part, the iPad to thank for that. . . . continue reading
Safari on the iPad
by J.J. on May.07, 2010, under iPad Unboxed
“This morning I shot an elephant in my pajamas. How he got in my pajamas I’ll never know.” – Groucho Marx
Safari on the iPad is an absolute joy to use and the experience feels unique to the iPad, not just an enlarged iPhone experience like I had expected. For web junkies, this just might be the best web experience out there. Safari on the iPad is very close to Safari on a Mac, but revamped for a touchscreen operation system. So in a sense, Safari actually lives up to it’s name on the iPad. Unlike most mobile devices, like the iPhone, that give you . . . continue reading
iChocolate
by J.J. on Apr.28, 2010, under iPad News
I normally don’t think of the iPad and chocolate going together since sticky fingers leave smudges on that beautiful screen– Wait, who am I kidding? I think everything goes together with chocolate. And apparently I’m not alone there.

iChocolates are a 20-piece gourmet chocolates assortment resembling iPhone and iPad app icons, boxed in a luxury iPhone-like package. Available through Etsy.
Now, if only I had a secret admirer that would send these to me . . .
iPad online usage almost as much as Blackberry, Android
by J.J. on Apr.16, 2010, under iPad News
According to data from NetApplications.com the Apple iPad has averaged 0.03% of all internet usage since it’s launch. While at first that seems insignificantly small, when compared to Blackberry’s internet usage (0.04%) and Android’s internet usage (0.04%) that is staggering. To think that in a week the iPad’s internet traffic is almost as much as devices that have been out for years longer. I wonder how long it will take the iPad to catch up with the iPhone/iPod Touch usage (0.6%)
To put this all in perspective, Windows XP accounts for 64.5% of the total traffic.
